EVALUATION OF IN-VITRO ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF BAUHINIA ACUMINATA L.

Abstract

Stem bark of Bauhinia acuminata Linn. (Caesalpiniaceae) has been used by the traditional healers in West Bengal, India in the management of inflammatory ailments. Attempts were made to validate its traditional use scientifically by evaluating the hydro-alcoholic extract of the stem bark in three different in-vitro models for anti-inflammatory activity. The models were Inhibition of the albumin denaturation, Membrane stabilization test and Proteinase inhibitory assay. Aspirin was used a standard drug for comparison. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA followed by Dunnet Multiple comparison test (control vs. test). The extract showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in all the three models (p<0.001, p<0.01 and p<0.05 in a concentration dependent manner).
