Abstract

Euphorbia hirta (N.O. - Euphorbiaceae) is an annual herb with a slender hairy stem. The plant produces milky latex, which is irritating to the mucous membranes. It has been found to possess significant medicinal value. Its juice is used in dysentery, colic and also in warm infection. Its root is used in treatment of anti-emetic, bone-fracture, emphysema, measles, nausea, tumors and urogenital anti-asthmatic property.
This paper communicates the isolation and structural elucidation of steroidal saponin: 24, 25-dihydro-euphol-3-O---D-arabinopyranoside from the roots of the Euphorbia hirta.
