Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM), or Diabetes ( Madhumeha ) chronic degenerative disease is one of the common metabolic disorder acquiring around above 3.0% of the world’s population and is anticipated to cross more than 4 to 5% by the year 2025. Since ancient times herbal medicines have been used as a traditional, folk, Ayurvedic & Unani medicines, the source of anti-diabetic medicines. In view of the above aspects, the present review discusses various medicinal plants with their anti-diabetic activity Which include Meshashringi or Gurmar leaves (Gymmema Sylvestre), Jamun Guthli( Syzygium cuimini ), Beeja saar or Vijay saar bark (Pterocarpus marsupium), Karela (Momordica charantia ) , Amla or Amlaki (Emblica officinalis), Bahera or Bibhtaki (Terminalia belirica),Hared or Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Shilajit or Shudh Shilajit (Asphaltum ), Bilva or Bael (Aegle marmelos Linn.), Methi leaves ( Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn.), Chirata or Chirayta whole parts (Swertia Chiretta), Phalsa or Falsa (Grewia asiatica), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Onion or Pyaj (Allium cepa Linn.), Indian Kino Tree, Kino (Pterocarpus marsupium), Methi or Fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum greacum), Neem or Nimba (Melia azadirachta), Giloe or Guduchi (Tinospora cardifolia), Chota or Swertia chirayata ( Enicastema litterale ), Jaman or Jamun Herb (Eugenia officinalis ), Avarum or Senna auriculata (Cassia auriculata ),Banba ( Legerstroemia Speciosa), Lahsun or Garlic, (Allium sativum), Indravaruni or Bitter apple (Citrullus Colocynthis), Peepal or pepal (Ficus bengalonsis and Ficus religiosa), Marod Phali or Atmora (Helicteres Isora) . These are known to show reduction in blood glucose levels and perform immense anti diabetic properties without any side effect or adverse reaction.
