Abstract

HIV infection/AIDS, a fatal disease is spreading rapidly in virtually every country. Over 20 million people are now believed to be infected with HIV throughout the world. As yet, there is no satisfactory or curative treatment for this disease. Current anti-retroviral therapies (ART) available for symptomatic treatment of AIDS are quite expensive or unaffordable by common men and are associated with rapid emergence of drug resistance. Therefore, urgent need for new anti-HIV/AIDS drug is a global concern. Anti-HIV inhibitory activity is widely distributed in nature in the form of medicinal plants. People with HIV/AIDS are very likely to seek herbal drugs particularly in the area of world where ART is not freely available or unaffordable. A survey in the U.S. has found that HIV infected patients used complementary or alternative medicine frequently. Therefore, plants and their products can be utilized as a source of new anti-HIV drugs. Many natural products have been shown to possess anti-HIV activity and some of these are in advanced stage of clinical testing. This review describes medicinal plants with anti-HIV activity. Attempts were made to cover as many reports as possible.
