Plants have been important source of medicine for thousands of years. Many plants and their products exhibit marked antioxidant activities. Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standley fruit is one of the important plant commonly known as bottle gourd (lauki) belongs to cucurbitaceae family. The plants contain triterpenoid, cucurbitacins, flavones, glycosides and have been used in traditional system of medicine. It has been used as Antihyperglycemic, Antihyperlipidemic, Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory, Antibacterial and Diuretic. The objective of this study is to explore Lagenaria siceraria seeds as natural antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of triterpenoids, flavonoids, sterols. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the Hydrogen peroxide free radical scavenging method. The extract showed maximum scavenging activity i.e. 71.23 Percent at 200µg. Antioxidant effect was also investigated qualitatively using 1, 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyle which show yellow coloration on TLC. The extract will be further evaluated for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. The results suggested that ethanolic seed extract of Lagenaria siceraria possessed significant antioxidant activity and the seeds can be used as excellent natural antioxidant.
