Abstract(RBIP-214)

Memory is a remarkable process which involves receiving the information from (external or internal) stimuli, encoding (translation of incoming stimulus into unique neural code), storage and retrieval (recovery of stored information at later occasion). A general model of memory system explains that from sensory input information /stimuli goes into sensory registers and after selective attention it converts into Short term/ Working memory and encoding of information in short term store changes it into Long term memory. Memory can be Sensory memory, Short term memory/ Working memory and Long term memory. Neurotransmitters involved in memory are Acetylcholine, Dopamine, Serotonin, Norepinephrine and Glutamate. Memory loss is of three types- Normal, Reversible and Permanent. The disorders which results into memory loss involve Alzheimer’s disease, Korsakoff syndrome, Frontal lobe dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Medications which are used to enhance memory in normal conditions includes- Vinpocetine, Piracetam, L-Huperzine, alpha- GPC, Theanine, Acetyl-L-Cartinine and with all these nootropic agents choline should be used. In case of diseased conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, Selegiline is used. All these medicines for enhancing memory are so effective and currently along with these some herbal medicines are also used. These include the herbs like- Ginkoga biloba, Ginseng, Shankpushpi, Rosemary etc.
