The review explores the primary interest in medical research underlining not the sentence, but the word - “cancer”. The understanding of cancer stem cells (CSCs ) provide insights into the development of predictive and prognostic markers and specific therapeutic intervention. The plasticity of CSCs is similar to that of normal stem cells, thus, their interaction with the surrounding normal tissues give rise to all the various types of cancers. CSCs have been identified in acute myeloid leukemia, in breast and in CNS tumors. The two important characteristics of these cells include their ability of self-renewal and their differentiation property. Dubbed CSCs divide indefinitely thus perpetuating the cancer overtime. This could be the reason why some therapies fail to wipe out cancer entirely. CSCs are resistant to standard cancer treatments and thus remain like the roots of a weed. Various advances in the knowledge of properties of cells have made the targeting and eradication of CSCs a topic of much interest. On the beneficial grounds, stem cells from umbilical cord converted into other cells have opened the ways for treatment of spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis.
