Abstract(RBIP-191)

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder named after the famous Neurologist James Parkinson. PD is characterized by abnormal posture, bradykinesia, rigidity, akinesia and resting tremors. It results from the death of dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain. The most obvious symptoms of PD are movement-related including shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking and gait. Other symptoms include sensory, sleep and emotional problems. PD is more common in the elderly with most cases occurring after the age of 50. The objective of the present study was to explore a nutrient which possesses anti-parkinsonian activity. In the present study, Aloe-vera juice was administered in rats and mice and evaluated for its anti-parkinsonian effect. Animal models used to study the anti-parkinsonian effect were oxotremorine induced tremors and rigidity induced by reserpine. In all the animal models employed in this study Aloe-vera juice was found to possess significant anti-parkinsonian activity.
