TERMINALIA CHEBULA: A MULTIPOTENTIAL HERB.

Herbal drugs have a special place in the world of pharmaceuticals especially developing countries rely on the Traditional system of medicine. Terminalia Chebula has been extensively used in ayurveda, unani & homoeopathic medicine and has become cynosure of modern medicine. The vast study done on the plant proved that the plant has many important phytochemical compounds like gallic acid, chebulinic acid, chebulagic acid and other related compounds which are found to be responsible for many of the pharmacological activities such as anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-hypoglycaemic, ant- ulcer, cardioprotective, anti-cancerous etc. Further the plant is used for the treatment of simple infections like fever, cough, pneumonia, tuberculosis and the serious diseases like Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome and has protective functions on heart, kidney and liver. This plant is useful for the strengthening of gums, proper digestion etc. It is used for the treatment of much inflammatory disease, for curing piles, and used as a gargle. It is also useful for the treatment of vaginal infections and for the normal functioning of testis. Due to these significant activities, plant is considered as multipotential herb. Further studies on this plant may be expected to reveal several of their other characteristic features hidden in it.
