Abstract(RBIP-174)

Today common people divert to used, Ayurvedic, Chinese and other herbal medicines. Though it is easily available in market from health food sources without prescription and is widely accepted throughout the world. According to recent survey the majority of all people who use herbal medicines don’t consult with medical prescriptioner about their consumptions due to a very common believe that anything providing by the nature is safe i.e. prompting people to consume medication without proper guidance and this leads to certain complications. The main reason for all this is least availability of scientific data on herbal drug interaction with synthetic and herbal drugs. Before combining herbal drug therapies with other medication it is important to look for all possible interactions. Herbal medicines may cause drug herb interactions which may be pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic. Interactions include absorption, distribution and metabolism. Ruhbarb and Aloe can cause Diarrohea which reduce the action of drug that has narrow therapeutic index (Digoxin). Pharmacodynamic interactions have additive activities i.e, anticoagulant action of warfarin is enhanced by Gingko. Therefore it is necessary to monitor herbal drug interaction in order to avoid any toxic effects of herbal drugs and improve their efficacy.
