Abstract(RBIP-173)

Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn. Belonging to family Oleaceae is a well known medicinal plant used in Indian system of medicine native of India, distributed wild in sub-Himalayan region and southwards to Godavari. Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn is extensively used in Indian traditional and folklore medicines to cure various human ailments. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides and sugar .The antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extract of leaves were evaluated using colonies growing in solid medium, establishing the zone of inhibition in vitro growth (ZOI) by cup plate method and compared with the standard drugs Streptomycin and Ciprofloxacin. The aqueous extract showed antimicrobial and antifungal activity against test organisms Micrococcus luteus, Bacillius subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Asperigillus niger in four different concentrations of extract i.e.50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 200mg/ml, 300mg/ml solvent. These results indicate that the aqueous extract of Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn leaves possess both Antimicrobial activity and Antifungal Activity and a search for the active compound is needed.

Keywords: Plant Aqueous Extract, Antimicrobial activity and Antifungal Activity.
