SHANKHPUSHPI: A COGNITION-BOOSTING AYURVEDIC MEDICINE.

Shankhpushpi is an Ayurvedic drug used for its action on the central nervous system, especially for boosting memory and improving intellect. In Ayurveda, it is mentioned as a rasayana because of its widespread use as a brain stimulator and memory enhancer. It is a wonderful brain tonic which aids in improving its ability and capacity and for rejuvenating nervous functions. It enhances learning, memory, intelligence, concentration level and the ability to recall. In traditional medicine it is used in the treatment of disorders such as hypertension, anxiety, neurosis, stress, insomnia, asthma, bronchitis, cerebral abnormalities, epilepsy, oedema, urinary disorders, constipation and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer and dementia etc. It supports digestion and avoids retention of water in the body, used as an aphrodisiac agent, boosts immune system, acts as a good tranquilizer, laxative, proved spermetogenic and strengthens urogenital system. It is used for chronic cough as it has mucolytic properties thus helps in chest congestion. It comprises of entire herbs with following botanicals viz., Convulvulus pluricaulis (Convulvulaceae), Evolvulus alsinoides (Convulvulaceae), Clitoria ternatea (Papilionaceae) and Canscora decussata (Gentianaceae). This review summaries a detailed survey of the literature on its pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and its traditional uses along with pharmacological activities.
