Bacopa monniera (Scrophulariaceae) commonly grows in marshy areas throughout India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and other Southern States of the U.S.A, ascending to an altitude of 1,320 m. The colour of the flower is pale blue or white. The herb contains the alkaloids brahmine, herpestatine, saponins, monnierin, hersaponin, bacoside A and bacoside B. Other constituents present in plant are D-mannitol, betulic acid, triacontane, nicotine etc. It is astringent, bitter and cooling, and is reported to improve the intellect. It is used in indigenous system of medicine for the treatment of asthma, hoarseness, insanity, epilepsy, and as a potent nervine tonic, cardiotonic and diuretic. The leaves (Juice) in children are used in bronchitis and diarrhea and leaves (paste) are remedy for rheumatism. In Ayurveda, plant is used for dermatitis, anaemia and diabetes. Brahmi possess no known side effects or toxicity. The drug forms an important ingredient of number Ayurvedic preparations, such as Brahmighrit, Brahmi-rasayana, Sarasvatarisht and Brahmivati. Although the studies of Bhrami have proved its efficacy in several complications but the detailed research work on standardization, isolation of bio-active constituents and their clinical trials is seriously required.
