Thiazoles are one of the most versatile heterocyclic compounds that have attracted much attention now days in the field of organic and medicinal chemistry. Numerous pharmacological activities have also been reported in reference to thiazoles such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, algicidal, antifungal, anticancer, antineoplastic, anthelmintic, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, phototoxic and antiviral agents etc. A lot of work has been done on synthesis of different types of thiazole derivatives. This review specifically focuses on the synthesis of various 2,4-disubstituted thiazoles via Hantzsch method, from thiosemicarbazides and thiosemicarbazone, rearrangement of α-thiocyano ketones, tcherniac’s synthesis, from α,α-dibromoketones , from cyclising dehydration of α-acylamino-carbonyl-compounds, through 2-aminothiazole, from dehydrogenation, charette synthesis upto 2011.
