Abstract(RBIP-110)

White biotechnology or industrial biotechnology provides us an alternate to get what we need for our day to day needs. There are a number of materials ranging from food to industrial value products for which till now we are entirely dependent on the natural sources. Hence we are eroding our natural resources like anything which is a threat to eco-system but also we are running out of our future demand. But now white biotechnology is multi-utility tool for us whether it is industrial waste management using genetically modified micro-organisms, pharmaceuticals and bio-fuels using bio-catalysts, production of packaging materials, cosmetics, food products using micro-organisms or increasing the production in agriculture sector using bio-fertilizers. Once set up they provide continuous, economic and fast supply of quality products without harming the environment. Now the governments of various nations are emphasizing on white biotechnology for clean and sustainable production and are setting up research centers for advanced biotechnology to develop techniques to generate energy from unconventional sources. Various developed countries like Japan, US, etc. and even developing countries like China are working in the field already. Government of India has also started giving funds to promote the scope of white biotechnology through various Governmental organizations like CSIR, ICMR, etc. to the scholars and institutes. So it is the need of hour to accept it as potential source for the food, pharmaceutical and bio-catalyst and bio-fuels.
