Abstract

The acute, short-term and subchronic oral toxicity of Boerhaavia erecta L aqueous extract and microencapsulated Curcubita pepo L seed oil were studied. In the acute test, female Wistar rats were gavaged with 2000 mg/kg of the test substances. No acute effects were observed. For short term toxicity study, Wistar rats of both sex received 1000 mg/kg/day for 28 days. Animals were sacrificed for hematological and biochemical evaluation. Decrease of glucose level in males was observed after Boerhaavia erecta L aqueous extract dosing. For the subchronic study, Wistar rats of both sexes were administered with three doses of natural products by oral route 7 days per week for 90 days. Animal body weight, food intake, hematology and biochemical parameters, selected tissue weights, and histopathological profile were examined. Erythrocytes, glucose and alkaline phosphatase were affected in animals treated with Boerhaavia erecta L aqueous extract. Total and differential leukocytes count, hemoglobin, urea, glucose and alanine aminotransferase were significantly affected in 90 days Curcubita pepo L treated animals. Organs and tissues abnormalities were not observed in histopathological examination. In summary, 2000 mg/kg/day was the acute NOAEL and 1000 mg/kg/day dose was the short-term and subchronic NOAEL for Boerhaavia erecta L extract and Curcubita pepo L seed oil.
