Abstract

Medicinal plants hold great potential in overcoming various clinical problems including gastric ulcers. The effect of methanolic leaf extract of Lantana camara (LCME) was studied on ethanol (80%) and indomethacin induced gastric ulcers in rats and also its analgesic effect was evaluated in mice by observing reduction in number of acetic acid induced writhings. Oral administration of LCME showed anti-ulcerogenic protection of up to 91.1% and 75% as compared to ethanol and indomethacin control group respectively. LCME also exhibited antioxidant activity as it showed dose dependent increase in Total radical trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), scavenging of super oxide radical, decreased lipid peroxidation formation (LPO). Histopathological evaluation further confirmed the anti-ulcer property of LCME. The Lantana camara showed healing of gastric ulcers.
