Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium among primary school pupils in Ganawuri Village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau state. Two hundred and sixty-one children between the ages of 10 – 19 were sampled; one hundred and fifty were from Dalwal Primary School and one hundred and eleven from Bum Primary School. All the children sampled were involved in water associated activities such as planting of rice in swampy areas, wading and playing in nearby streams. Of the one hundred and fifty children sampled in Dalwal Primary School, none (0%) was positive for S. haematobium infection. The urine samples examined microscopically had no ova of S. haematobium. Out of the one hundred pupils sampled from Bum Primary School, only one (0.9%), a female pupil of 12 years was positive for urinary schistosomiasis. From this study, it was observed that urinary schistosomiasis was not prevalent in the study area. Awareness through public education of the populace of Ganawuri on the importance of urinary schistosomiasis will be necessary, since the presence of the infection in one pupil shows presence of the parasite in the study area and a possibility of it’s spread in the locality and beyond.
