Abstract

Labisia pumila is a popular medicinal plant in Malaysia and has been used in the treatments of various health complications. In this study, in vitro anti-histaminergic and anti-cholinergic activities of dichloromethane (DCM)crude leaf extract of Labisia pumila (DELP) were investigated on guinea pig ileum. Phytochemical screening on the bioactive extract was also examined.. The in vitro anti-histaminergic and anti-cholinergic studies were examined by using organ bath containing Krebs-Henseleit solution (pH 7.4) gassed with 95% O2 and 5% CO2 and maintained at 37oC. Two concentrations DELP (1x10-6 and 1x10-4 g/ml) were challenged against a range of doses of histamine and acetylcholine (10-8 M – 10-2 M). The DELP showed significant (p < 0.05) competitive concentration-dependent anti-histaminergic and anti-cholinergic effects. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponin, alkaloids and steroids.
